Preceptorships
Several additional training and preceptorship options are now available to those who register for "Primary Training in Hyperbaric Medicine". These options have been incorporated following safety and effectiveness reviews of the start-up process for new hyperbaric facilities.
At the present time, the currently recommended "clinical" training format is attendance at a 40-hour largely didactic course. Several such courses are available and approved by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology, and the Baromedical Nurses Association.
These courses provide an entry-level foundation for understanding and implementing the practice of hyperbaric medicine. One shortcoming of this form of training is the limited amount of time spent actually operating hyperbaric delivery systems. This shortcoming is compounded when graduates face delays before their hyperbaric service commences operations. The steep learning curve associated with the didactic training course May to erode with such delays. Further complicating this problem is the common lack of knowledgeable resources available elsewhere within the hospital.
We now have in place a process to address and overcome this educational deficiency. Registrants of "Primary Training in Hyperbaric Medicine" can choose from one or more of the following modules:
-
Primary Training in Hyperbaric Medicine
- A 40-hour largely didactic course,
the necessary prerequisite for physician hospital credentialing; certification
(CHT) for technicians and technologists through the National Board of Diving
and Hyperbaric Medical Technology; and certification (CHRN) for nurses through
the Baromedical Nurses Association.
