Fellowships
The Hyperbaric Medicine and Would Healing Service at Palmetto Health Richland/ University of South Carolina School of Medicine invites applications for a one-year Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine fellowship.
As a primary teaching institution for the USC School of Medicine, the hospital serves as a Level 1 Trauma Center and hosts 16 fellowship and residency programs. Access to basic science experts is available through the University of South Carolina and an animal hyperbaric facility is in place at the USC Department of Surgery research laboratory.
The hyperbaric medicine program serves as a major international training resource. Nationally, some 60% of all new hyperbaric consultants receive training through our 40-hour course, titled "Primary Training in Hyperbaric Medicine". This course also attracts attendance from throughout the world. In addition, the program hosts an annual "advanced" training seminar in hyperbaric medicine. This seminar likewise draws an international audience and leading clinical and basic scientists who serve as faculty.
The following is an approximate accounting of the fellowship experience:
- 1 wk - Primary Training in Hyperbaric Medicine; course attendance.
- 1 wk - The “business” of hyperbaric medicine and wound healing.
- 1 wk - Annual Scientific Meeting of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society; meeting attendance.
- 1 wk - Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina
- 1 wk - Mercy Hospital, Miami, Florida
- 1 wk - Lecture preparation time for one hour presentation to be given through the year as part of the Primary Training in Hyperbaric Medicine course which is given approximately eight times annually.
- 2 wks - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Diving Medical Officer Training Course, Seattle, Washington; course attendance.
The remaining fellowship period is allotted to clinical practice, which includes:
CLINICAL PRACTICE:
Hyperbaric medicine consultations and related case management Wound Healing Center patient evaluation and treatment, transcutaneous oximetry interpretations. Four days per month allotted for clinical skills maintenance in the area of primary residency training, if requested
